Backlinks for AI Search

AI answers cite sources they can find, parse and trust. The data now points more to brand mentions than to raw link counts. Here is what the studies actually show, and where the confident claims are still speculation.

Backlinks for AI search is shorthand for a real question: when an AI answer engine like Google's AI Overviews or a chat assistant builds a response, what makes your brand one of the sources it reaches for? Links are part of the answer, but the field is new, and the early data has shifted the emphasis from links toward mentions. Honesty about what is proven matters more here than confident promises.

What the data actually shows

Two large studies give us more than opinion. In an Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while backlinks correlated at just 0.218, roughly three times the predictive strength for mentions over links. Correlation is not causation, but the direction is striking: being named across the web tracks AI visibility more closely than link volume does.

Semrush, working with Kevin Indig and Growth Memo, looked at 1,000 domains across five AI platforms (ChatGPT, ChatGPT with Search, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity) and reached a complementary conclusion. Backlink quality and authority predicted AI mentions far better than sheer volume, and the effect only became significant once a domain crossed into higher authority tiers. Tellingly, nofollow links carried nearly the same weight as follow links, which makes sense if what these systems reward is being referenced on a credible site, link attribute aside.

What we can say with reasonable confidence

  • Brand mentions are the stronger signal. Across the Ahrefs data, being named consistently on reputable sites out-predicted backlinks for AI Overview visibility.
  • Authority beats quantity. Both studies agree that a few links from strong, relevant sites do more than a pile of weak ones, and that small link wins rarely move the needle below a certain threshold.
  • Corroboration helps. Information confirmed across several reputable sources is easier for any system to treat as reliable. Coverage that earns a link usually earns that corroboration too.
  • Clarity makes you quotable. Pages that answer a question directly are easier to extract and cite than pages that bury the answer.

What is still genuinely speculative

We will be clear about the limits. These are correlation studies, not a published ranking formula, and nobody outside the companies running these systems knows the exact weighting of mentions versus links versus on-page clarity in a generated answer. The mechanics change frequently and are rarely documented. Anyone selling a precise recipe for AI Overview citations is guessing with confidence. The responsible position is to do the durable things the data plausibly supports and avoid pretending the dials are visible.

The honest split: that mentions, links and clarity all help your standing is well supported by the Ahrefs and Semrush data. The exact recipe for a citation is not public, and we will not pretend otherwise. We optimise for credibility, not for a setting nobody can see.

How the signals compare

FactorEffect on classic searchWhat the AI-search data suggests
Unlinked brand mentionsMinor, indirectStrongest correlate of AI Overview visibility in the Ahrefs study
Authoritative editorial linksDirect ranking signalHelp, mainly through authority once past a threshold
Nofollow linksPass little ranking creditNearly matched follow links for AI mentions in the Semrush study
Clear, direct answers on the pageHelps relevanceMakes the page easier to quote and cite

Common mistakes

  • Chasing link volume. The data rewards a handful of links from credible, relevant sites, not a stack of weak ones below the authority threshold.
  • Ignoring unlinked mentions. Treating a mention as worthless without a clickable link misreads what the studies found.
  • Stripping nofollow opportunities. For AI visibility a nofollow mention on a credible site still appears to count.
  • Buying an AI-visibility shortcut. There is no proven secret setting; the gains come from credibility and clear content.

What to actually build

The practical work overlaps almost entirely with good SEO and good PR: pages that answer real questions clearly, third-party coverage that names your brand and your category together, and links from publishers a person would also trust. A digital PR campaign that earns coverage tends to deliver all three at once, the link, the mention and the corroboration, which is why it is a sensible bet for AI visibility even with the uncertainty.

How SEO Backlinks approaches this

We aim every campaign at both a link and a clear brand mention in the same coverage, because the data says the mention may matter most while the link still supports classic rankings. We lead with digital PR backlinks from real publishers rather than chasing an AI-specific trick, and we are upfront that no one can guarantee a citation. FAQs

Do backlinks help you get cited in AI Overviews?

Some, but less than mentions. In Ahrefs' 2025 study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while backlinks correlated at only 0.218. So links still help your standing, but being named across reputable sites is the stronger signal in that data.

Do brand mentions without a link still matter for AI search?

The data suggests they matter a lot. The same Ahrefs study found unlinked brand mentions out-correlate backlinks with AI Overview visibility. Being named consistently across reputable sites helps these systems associate your brand with a topic, so we treat unlinked mentions as worth earning, not a consolation prize.

Are nofollow links worthless for AI visibility?

No. In Semrush's study with Kevin Indig, nofollow links showed almost the same correlation with AI mentions as follow links. For AI visibility the value seems to come from being referenced on a credible site, which a nofollow mention still delivers.

Is there a separate way to optimise for AI search?

Less than the hype suggests. Clear, well-sourced pages that answer the question directly, plus genuine third-party coverage that names your brand, are the same fundamentals that help classic search. There is no proven secret setting; most of the gains come from doing the durable basics well.

Can you guarantee an AI Overview citation?

No, and anyone who guarantees one is overselling. Citations are chosen by systems we do not control and that change often. What you can do is make your brand a credible, widely-corroborated source, which is the work that genuinely improves the odds.
